DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
HALF-TIME WITH BENEFITS

The Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation is a
growing, family-oriented congregation in Sandy Springs, Georgia
(metro Atlanta). We are on track to become the leading green UU
congregation in the Southeast. We seek a half-time Director of
Religious Education (DRE) to help fulfill this vision by developing
and directing a year-round program of religious education for our
infants, children, and youth.
Duties: In partnership with our Religious Education Committee, our
DRE will design the curriculum plan, recruit and train volunteers,
maintain the RE calendar, and oversee implementation of our Safe
Congregation policy. Our DRE will personally maintain our enrollment
database, attendance records and budget expenses, communicate with
volunteers and the Congregation, attend staff and RE Committee
meetings, provide teachers with lessons, materials, supplies and
support, supervise the nursery and activity time participants, and
participate in intergenerational services.
Qualifications: Experience in children's religious education.
Sympathy with Unitarian Universalist principles, especially respect
for the environment.
Compensation: Salary will be between $16,000 and $18,000 (which is
within the recommended guidelines of the Unitarian Universalist
Association) , depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits
include partial funding of health, dental, life and disability
insurance, a flexible spending account option for payment of medical
expenses before taxes, two weeks' vacation, two weeks' study leave,
and an additional three Sundays per year for networking and
conferences. The DRE will be off one Sunday per month.
Congregation. Northwest has a membership of about 165 members, who
live throughout the metro Atlanta area. We have Sunday services at
10 am, during which children's activities are provided. During
our "Second Hour," from 11:15 to 12:15, we offer children's
religious education classes, along with a menu of adult activities.
We have recently begun to install solar panels on our sanctuary roof
as a demonstration of our commitment to green principles. Our

Other Information. The DRE reports to our settled Minister, Reverend
Jim Macomber, and works closely with staff, our lay Religious
Education Committee and Ministry Team Leader for Learning. We
currently have about 45 children in the program, about 20 volunteer
teachers, of which half are not parents. Classes are held in our
separate Chalice House. Our hiring process will include a police
background check, as required by our Safe Congregation Policy.

Applications will be accepted through March 15, 2009. Interviews
with our Search Committee will be scheduled in late March. Our Board
of Trustees will appoint the new DRE on about April 1, based on the
recommendation of the Search Committee. We would like the new DRE to
start on about May 1, to permit overlap with our current interim
DRE, Karen Edmonds.
